“A Fort Lauderdale restaurant honoring the full spectrum of Mexican cooking through technique-driven, traditional dishes”
Who We Are
Mexican cuisine is one of the most thorough and expressive culinary traditions in the world—shaped by history, geography, and generations of technique. At Epazote, that depth is personal. We are a small, family-owned restaurant built on a lifelong relationship with Mexican cooking, approached with intention, respect, and joy.
Our kitchen is guided by our passionate Chef Hugo, whose training began in Mexico City and grew through years of hands-on experience—from neighborhood taco shops to kitchens alongside respected chefs and resorts throughout Mexico. That journey informs everything we do: food that is rooted, disciplined, and made to be eaten, not performed.
Our menu reflects the breadth of Mexico not as a checklist of regions, but as a living cuisine. From slow-cooked guisados to street-style tacos, handmade tortillas to vibrant salsas, each dish is grounded in tradition and executed with care.
We believe great Mexican food should be both authentic and accessible—deeply flavorful, thoughtfully prepared, and meant to be shared.
Our philosphy
At Epazote, tradition is not static—it is practiced daily.
We cook the way Mexican food has always been cooked: with patience, technique, and respect for ingredients. Our kitchen focuses on time-honored methods, quality sourcing, and balance of flavor rather than trends or shortcuts.
Instead of limiting ourselves to one region, we celebrate the continuum of Mexican cooking—street food, home-style dishes, and classic preparations that speak to Mexico’s culinary richness.
Every plate reflects three core values:
Integrity of ingredients
Mastery of traditional technique
Consistency, every day.
The Food
Our menu is designed to be generous, focused, and deeply satisfying.
You’ll find:
Street tacos prepared with carefully seasoned meats and house-made salsas
Slow-simmered guisados that showcase patience and depth of flavor
Handmade elements that honor corn, chiles, herbs, and spice
Dishes meant to be enjoyed casually, without pretense
We keep prices fair so our food can be enjoyed often—not just on special occasions.
Why Epazote?
Epazote exists because passion can be tasted. We are a small, family-owned restaurant built to serve our community food that is honest, rooted, and memorable.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, our goal is always the same: that every plate reflects the depth and integrity of authentic Mexican cuisine.
Stepping into Epazote is about more than flavor. It’s about feeling transported—through family-style hospitality, a space filled with Mexican pieces collected over time, and details chosen with intention. Nothing is accidental; everything has a purpose.
Even our name speaks to that commitment. Epazote is a traditional herb used in classic Mexican cooking, valued for its distinct character and essential role in time-honored techniques. We chose the name because it reflects who we are and what we believe in: authenticity that begins at the root and carries through every dish we serve.

MORE ABOUT CHEF HUGO
Chef Hugo Mendez, co-founder and head chef of Epazote, brings more than a decade of experience rooted in traditional Mexican cooking and disciplined culinary training. A graduate of gastronomy university in Mexico City, his approach to food has always been grounded in technique, repetition, and respect for tradition.
After his studies, Hugo continued his professional journey in Cabo San Lucas, where he trained and worked across a range of kitchens—from local restaurants to fine-dining resort establishments. This period shaped his cooking philosophy: food that is deeply traditional, carefully executed, and meant to be enjoyed without excess or pretense.
Over time, Hugo’s work led him into private chef roles, cooking for families and guests in villas throughout Cabo. Preparing meals in these intimate settings reinforced his belief that great food is not about spectacle, but about care, consistency, and hospitality. His cooking became known for honoring classic Mexican flavors while maintaining balance and restraint.
Epazote was born from that philosophy. Encouraged by guests who valued not only the food, but the experience around it, Hugo and his wife, Simonne Carrasco Mendez, relocated to Fort Lauderdale and created a restaurant that reflected his culinary roots and their shared vision of hospitality and entreprenuership.
Today at Epazote, Chef Hugo brings the same principles to every plate: traditional technique, thoughtful preparation, and food that reflects the depth of Mexican cuisine. Whether dining in, gathering for weekend brunch, or sharing a catered meal, guests experience cooking shaped by years of practice and a genuine connection to cooking and culture.
